Shopping online is easy, but criminals are always lurking around, ready to steal from you. This is true whether you are shopping online or in the brick-n-mortar stores. The online stores are wagering for your business by offering great online deals only, coupons, and a Cyber Monday after the holidays. Shopping online is just like shopping at the regular store other than you get to shop in your PJ’s. So, you need to know some savvy tips to keep thieves at bay.


The first tip is for beginners to ease their fear of online shopping. Go visit the brick-n-mortar to see what the product looks like and the price. Then go online and see that the description of the product is true. The online store gives you more information that what you might get in the store. Make sure that you print out the receipt page that the online store will provide.

The second tip is to make sure you know how to tell if the site is secure. Check to see of the site uses encrypted software, by locating the pad lock symbol (SSL) which means Secure Socket Layer. They also usually have a seal stating that they are secured. Also get in the habit of making sure that the site starts with https. That will keep you on sites that are regulated and watched by the industry.

The third tip is to see if the site has a paper catalog. Most companies that have a paper catalog have been around using direct mail or phone orders. Find out if they let you return items at the brick-n-mortal stores. Always see if they have a phone number. Never shop if they don’t.

The fourth tip is to buy some gift cards and use them to shop online. This will take the fear out of shopping online.

The fifth tip is to Google the site name. If there is a bad review or and unhappy customer, it will be posted on some bulletin board. People love to talk, so check out some blog pages. Use word-of-mouth referrals. Ask a friend what sites that they order from and the results.

The sixth tip is to purchase a pre-paid visa that you use only for online shopping. Just load a small amount per shopping time frame. Don’t panic after all we hand over our visa to waitress and gas attendants every day without a second thought. So, enjoy the shopping lane on the World Wide Web.
